Welcome to Troika Editions

12th July 2010

We are delighted to bring you the last in our troika of pictures by Noemie Goudal from her series "Escapades".

Noemie is a rising talent who is attracting much deserved attention. Recently she has been selected for a solo show at Salon Gallery; chosen to exhibit at the Hooper's Gallery Summer Show - the best of the Royal College Degree Shows and has future solo shows at the Hotshoe Gallery, London; the LBC Gallery in Dublin and in December at the Uno+Uno Gallery in Milan.

Noemie’s work centres upon the construction of fictions within the landscape, that oscillate between the real and artificial. By building sets or creating stages in outside environments in which her protagonist can enact their dreams, Noemie seeks to offer alternative spaces where the construction of new fantasy lands is made possible.

As she said in her recent interview in the BJP “I wanted to mix the two worlds to see how they interact, I wanted to see how much you can enter either the make believe or the real.”

Dominique

Inspired by other people's stories, Noemie Goudal's series "Escapades" explores story telling in photography.

On the roof top of Noemie's family home in Paris, her mother, Dominique, realises her fantasy of being Russian. With the use of simple props; a fur hat and shawl, Noemie suggests a cold Moscow night.

Maria

Maria is obsessed with foam, describing her fascination with the white stuff as an addiction.

Remembering an afternoon from her early childhood, cooking pancakes with her father and learning to whisk egg-white Maria quickly became obsessed with foam, wanting to touch and eat it and even fill a bath and bathe in it.

Tiffany

The photograph of Tiffany is one of Noemie's favourite images from the series. Using a TV aerial as a mast and an old discarded cast iron bath as the hull, Noemie used what she found around her to recreate Tiffany's dream.

So the furrows of the ploughed field became the waves on the sea and the tufts of dried grass became the crests of waves as Tiffany sails off into the great blue yonder.

We Recommend: The Observer's Monthly Photographic show

We Recommend: The Observer's Monthly Photographic show

The Observer and Guardian newspapers have re-launched their picture gallery with an improved slide show. The new system allows for embedding of captions and links, making this a whole new interactive process.

At the Observer, picture editor Jim Powell has put together a review of the month's offerings of photography around the world. You can use the pause button to linger over the images you like or click the links to go to extended reviews or direct to the gallery sites.

This could become a wonderful source for what's on where with great visual prompts for what to see.

Critic's Choice: July

Critic's Choice: July

We are delighted to bring you our July Critic's Choice by Diane Smyth of the British Journal of Photography. Diane has chosen "Willsbridge" by Tom Pope from his series "Over the Edge" and writes:

"...this is serious funny business. Tom Pope's playing the Fool, a naive but intelligent role. Fools don't play by the rules, in fact they seem incapable of it, and that's what makes them absurd. But that's what makes them visionary too. "Not all there" in this world, they have a special take on it, and were once revered for it."

Tom is currently studying at the Royal College of Art where he is pursuing his ideas about anarchy and the absurd. In April 2010 his portrait of the scientist Stephen Jones was selected as the National Portrait Gallery's Photograph of the Month and his series "The Escapades of the Higher Man" was shown at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea.

Collections

Collections

We are delighted to have launched Collections with photography from the 1000 Words Magazine Collection.

Our new initiative is designed to provide photography organisations with the opportunity to showcase their own portfolio of artists and photography online and pursue an alternative funding avenue through the sale of limited edition photography prints.

We hope with your support we can help these photography projects continue to thrive in this new age of reduced government financing of the arts.

The net proceeds from all sales of limited edition prints in these special collections will go to the photography organisation and the supporting photographers. In some cases through the generosity of the photographers, the net proceeds will go entirely to the photographic organisation.

As announced in May, we will be working with FORMAT International Photography Festival and their Exposure Open. Twelve selected photographers will be given the opportunity to show case their work on Troika Editions and become part of the FORMAT Collection, with funds raised through the sale of these prints going to the artist and in support of FORMAT.

Troika Editions will also be sponsoring the new FORMAT Collection Award with a group exhibition for three winning artists to be held during London’s Photomonth 2010 at the Troika Editions gallery in London.

More partners will be announced in the coming weeks.
